About NDLEA
By Decree No. 48 of the 29th of December 1989, a federal law enforcement agency known as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) was created. The order was issued primarily in response to the growing demand for and trafficking in narcotic narcotics and psychotropic substances, which in the 1980s had a negative impact on Nigerians’ reputation abroad. Since then, the trafficking of illegal substances has developed into an organized crime that threatens the nation’s security and economic growth, necessitating immediate response and top priority from the government.
In Nigeria, the NDLEA is in charge of drug policy and management. The Agency is mandated to stop the illegitimate production, importation, exportation, sale, and trafficking of psychoactive drugs within its umbrella.
Interdiction and destruction of illegal drugs and other substances are performed by NDLEA employees. They also take part in drug addiction prevention initiatives like advocacy, counseling, and drug user rehabilitation. A prominent presence at international airports, seaports, border crossings, and key roads, thousands of skilled drug operators and well-trained support employees of NDLEA work throughout Nigeria to carry out the agency’s mandate.
NDLEA agents are actively involved in the tracking down, apprehending, and prosecuting of traffickers of dangerous substances in accordance with the numerous pertinent drug laws of Nigeria as part of their commitment to protecting society from the risks of illicit narcotics and their purveyors.
