Princeton University Overview

Princeton University is located in New Jersey. It is a private Ivy League research university in Princeton. It was founded in 1746 in Elizabeth as the College of New Jersey. It is the 4th oldest institution of higher education in the United States.

Princeton University Admission

The Princeton University runs admission for Undergraduates, Graduates and International students in an extraordinary academic environment.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School applicants must, before they are enrolled, hold a bachelor’s degree or its foreign equivalent from an accredited college or university. (Foreign equivalents may in some cases have a normal program length that is shorter or longer than four years.  No degree that has a normal program length shorter than three years will be considered equivalent to a bachelor’s degree.)

Princeton University Undergraduate Admission Eligibility

  • The applicant may submit one application per year only. This one application can be to one department, program, or combined program.
  • The Graduate School will not offer admission to an applicant seeking a second Ph.D. in the same or similar field of study.

Princeton University International Students Admission Eligibility

The admission requirement for International students are the same as that of the undergraduates as stated above.

English Language Tests for International Students

Graduate students must demonstrate a level of oral proficiency in the English language sufficient to participate successfully in all the various activities that comprise a graduate education, including classwork, research, research presentations, group meetings, project teamwork, and the teaching of undergraduates. The two internationally recognized tests of English language proficiency which we accept are Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

The following applicants must submit valid TOEFL or IELTS scores:

  • Applicants whose native language is not English. Native language is defined as the language spoken in one’s family, community, and nation. (English must be the native language of the nation.)
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have earned an undergraduate degree from a college/university in a country where the native language is not English.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English and who have earned a master’s degree in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English but studied for less than three years at a college/university in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada.
  • The only exemption for this requirement is if the native language is not English, but the applicant has or will have studied for a minimum of three years towards a bachelor’s degree or a Ph.D. in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or Anglophone Canada before enrollment.
  • Receiving a bachelor’s degree in a country that lists English as an official language such as India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Nigeria, or Singapore does not exempt an applicant from the English language proficiency requirement.

Princeton University Admission Requirements – File Upload Requirements

During the application process, applicants are required to upload statement of academic purpose, resume/curriculum vitae, transcripts, fall semester grades, and additional required files as specified by the individual departmental requirements.

Make sure to review the file upload requirements below to make the application process as easy.

Note the following when preparing application materials to be uploaded;

  • Files must not exceed 10 MB. Uploaded documents may contain no more than 75 pages. We support the following file formats:
  • Document: .doc, .docx, .odg, .odp, .odt, .pdf, .ppt, .pptx, .rtf, .wpd
  • We support media files as large as 5GB, but please be advised that larger files will take longer to upload from your Internet connection and may stall if you are on a wireless connection or one that cannot sustain a connection for the necessary period of time. We support the following file formats:
  • Video: .3g2, .3gp, .avi, .m2v, .m4v, .mkv, .mov, .mpeg, .mpg, .mp4, .mxf, .webm, .wmv
  • Audio: .aac, .m4a, .mka, .mp3, .oga, .ogg, .wav
  • Slide: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tif, .tiff
  • Files cannot be password protected.
  • PDF files cannot have a digital signature.
  • Files should not be poster size.
  • Each file should be saved separately.

When scanning hard copy materials to upload into an application, please note:

  • The resolution should be no more than 300 dpi.
  • Black and white is recommended.
  • Removing images will help reduce the file size if necessary

Princeton University GPA Requirements

The Cumulative GPA for all courses must be a minimum of 3.9 or higher.

How to Apply for Princeton University

Application can be done by applicants from September through December for admission commencing in the fall term of the following academic year.

Late applications are not accepted.

There is no spring admission, and graduate study at Princeton is offered on a full-time basis. Applicants can apply only to one academic department for one degree per year.

The application fee is nonrefundable. The Graduate School will not offer admission to an applicant seeking a second Ph.D. in the same or similar field of study.
